Upgrading Power Supply

i have a dell optiplex gx270 mid tower computer. It came with a 250w power supply. I wanted to add a better video card, but most video cards now require a 350w power supply or greater. The card i got also requires a 350w power supply. I called dell, and they told me that a 250w is the highest i can buy from them for this computer. I was wondering if there are any power supplies out there that i can fit into the dell proprietary case without having to modify the case thats 350w or greater. Or even if i buy a power supply and modify the case a little so it fits, will or can that damage any of the components in the computer like the motherboard or hard drives in any way if i put a power supply greater than 250w? Any recommendations?

Which form factor is the case?  Mini-tower or desktop?

because this is a slim (custom case) you will find it will be unlikely that you can put any other psu in there. especially if dell themselves have said so. you could change the whole case (move motherboard, dvd/cd, hdd to another case)

You can easily just buy another power supply.  It wont fit in the case, but you can still use it.  If you feel it needs to fit then i would call Dell support and see what they suggest.  I build my own PC's but I have dealt with the small Dell cases at work, they're a pain.

I would agree with smck, you can just pull the motherboard out and get a standard ATX tower.

It's a mid tower case, not the mini tower. Dell only sells 250w power supplies for this computer. The regular atx power supplies at local retail stores have the fan and power on opposite side than the case.

Here's one that says its compatible with the Optiplex GX270. Just click on the "MB compatibility" tab to see the GX270 listed

I sugest you talk to them first and discuss which model of case it will fit.
