Preventing files on shared folder from being emailed

I have been requested to have all files on a specific shared drive protected against being emailed. This is a public drive that all users have access to, and can add anything to share. All domain users have folder Modify permission, and full control share permission. Is this possible to accomplish with the features available in Server 2003 R2, is there third party software out there, or is this not possible?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Short of configuring your smtp gateways to block certain file formats.........what is to stop them from copying the file to an external media and emailing whatever they want from wherever they want?

As long as they have read access,  they have the ability to open the file and "save as" anywhere including the local machine.

following the above correct comment, the only way to do this is to DENY the user rights to the file / folder.

You also can use various Data Leap Prevention ( DLP) platforms like Vontu or Vericept. You can base it on different groups etc file types... Proofpoint an appliance based DLP AC SPAM Encrytpion appliance can do it as well. I have had great luck with all the above and lean towards Vontu just because I like it better (no I don't work for them).

WRM also does the same thing for preventing email. If you have rights to the file you can email it without any of the above.

Depending what line of business you are in I feel Vontu ro Vericept are the best for data protection. It protects data at rest, data in motion, and data at the end point ( mail)
