data storage and backup(mirroring)

I was thinking is there any software out there that can do some software mirroring or hardware mirroring, my idea is to keep my data from being gone due to hdd failure. Most of the data is video so I guess it shouldn't get corrupted by viruses. Any opinions on how to do that. Maybe compression since i will only recover the data if the hdd is damaged. I heard that emc retrospec can do this.
