marshallmoon,

What is your operating system?

I can tell you why it is changing but I am not aware of a way to really prevent it permenantely.  The browser is getting and using the favicon the site has made and uses.  To show this is the case go to the site and look to the left of the URL.  The little image should be a match of what your desktop icon becomes.  The icones in Favorites will also do the same thing.  If there is no Internet connection or you don't visit the site then the image can switch and stay with the default but I don't know of a way to stop your OS or browser from using the favicon.  Older versions of IE and older operating systems did not do this but it is a "built in" feature of the latest ones.

Let me know if you have any questions or need more information.
