I have a formula field in group footer 2 that I want to sum down to the group 1 footer.  Is their a way I can do this?  I thought I have seen it done using variables?

Try this

In the report header add a formula
Name - DeclVars;
Global NumberVar FormulaTotal := 0;

In the group 1 header
Name - ResetTotal;
Global NumberVar FormulaTotal;
FormulaTotal := 0;

Add this line to your formula at the beginning
Global NumberVar FormulaTotal;

Add this just before you return the value
FormulaTotal := FormulaTotal + YourVariableWithTheFormulaVariable;

In the group 1 footer
Name - ResetTotal;
Global NumberVar FormulaTotal;
