very much depends on the "quality" of the "server" (or provider).
So, choose the better one even it is farther.
I stay in Italy. I have a domain (and mailbox) in USA. Before, our provider here was not a good one, so I use the SMTP of that USA server to send to all of the world. It was better than using the Italy one.
Now, we have a good provider, then I use the SMTP of Italy provider, and it is very okay to all of the world.
(we send mails to more than 20 countries all of the world).
Usually that happens if SMTP servers are busy on certain times, so if you can use a SMTP server from Japan, then delays can be shorter. It's never more faster. Sometimes you need to base your selection on a very good SMTP server even if it's in USA or in another country of the world.
We have a good SMTP server that operates from USA through we are based in Canada. We had to change until we found a good one because before we experienced delays and some of our e-mail messages bounced back.

thank you, all.
which one would you recommend?
I would recommend Comcast or SBC (powered by Yahoo).
You can look internationally later on if you still have problems. There's a link that will help: http://www.e-eeasy.com/SMTPServerList.aspx
