SM BUS Controller Driver

I upgraded the Gateway GT5404 machine from Vista (OEM) to XP Pro. I was able to find drivers for all components except the SM Bus Controller. (In the Device Manager, it appears with a "!"--so I disabled it.) I have an Intel 945G Viiv motherboard. The bus controller is an Intel Corp 82801G (ICH7).

The system is operational without this drvier, but I experience some intermittant problems with the USB mouse, for instance. I'm not sure what functions are handled by the SM Bus Controller.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Your computer specs show this PC to have the Intel 945G Chipset which is the driver needed for the SM bus.

Try the Intel chipset driver

The SM bus is the system management bus.  It allows software to get statistics related to voltage, fan speeds, and temperature.  It can also set some of these parameters.  I'd be surprised if this had anything to do with your mouse's intermittent connectivity.

I would first suspect the physical port, cable, or mouse itself.

I have a simular situatiobn with HP "VISTA" Customer wanted XP to be the O/S. After install and evem SP3, the SM Bus Controller does not show up in windows upate section. HP only supplies Vista drivers for the product/CPIU.

Trying the independent mobo driver search to solve the problem.
