Windows XP does not have a driver for you SATA controller, so this must be downloaded here: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=21310
Then you can follow this tutorial: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml
There is likely a setting in the bios that would need to be changed.  With compaq's they label it Serial ATA Native mode.  or something like that.  Hope that helps you

I have had a personal experience on an IBM T61, and XP did not install until I removed completely the existing Vista partiotion, recreated it, reformated using XP.
And of course if it is SATA you have to change the bIOS from native to compatible mode prior to do anything. After installing XP and .loading all the drivers, load the SATA driver for XP, reboot, and enable the native mode. Or you can follow Slow mo instructions and press F6 upoon installation.
