Ghost won't let me create a new scheduled backup even though all backup jobs have been deleted.

In the Ghost console I deleted the previous scheduled backup job and then tried to create a new scheduled backup job. The C drive still shows the scheduled icon. I've rebooted numerous times over the last couple of days with no change. I'm running XP Pro. I have not tried uninstalling and re-installing. I was hesitant to do this since I believe I got Ghost from one of the versions of Norton SystemWorks I've had over the years. I only have the disk for the last one, Norton SystemWorks Premier 2005. I looked on the disk and the Ghost folder had some files or .txt saying Ghost 2003...

I found the agent log? in the agent folder. Last few entriies are below. (not sure what event log it couldn't write to but I have a different question posted for that). I posted more of the log with some other errors that may be relevant in the Code Snippet section. I replaced my 120GB D: drive with a 1TB drive that I partitioned in half to a D: and E: drive. I used Ghost to copy the old D: drive, put in the new drive, partitioned the E: drive on it and then used Ghost to restore the D: drive partition using the "fill unallocated space" option. The E: drive used to be my external Maxtor drive which is now the L: drive. I wanted to change the backup job to put the backup on the new E: drive and limit file sizes to 2GB (plan to use Carbonite to back up those online).

It looks like you have Ghost 9.0 already running on the system and you're trying to use Ghost 2003.  If this is the case, discard the 2003 version and use Ghost 9.0, which is much better for handling different kinds of drives.

Run chkdsk on the drives, uninstall and reinstall Ghost 9 ( 2003 ) from your latest CD.

I hope this helps !

I don't understand... How can I verify that I am running both or that I have both installed?
I want to be very careful on uninstalling anything. Because I'm not sure if I have the setup for re-installing ghost 9. As far as I know (could be wrong -- it was 2 or 3 years ago) I upgraded from Norton SystemWorks 2004 to Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier. I think it was later that I became aware that Ghost came with it. Maybe I just didn't install Ghost right away. In any event I've been using it since. Scheduled backup job for my internal C: and D: drives. Images backed up onto an external drive (E:). This all worked fine for years. Base on Sunday morning and 4 incrementals each day. 2 base backups max (2 weeks history). I replaced my 120GB D: drive with a 1TB drive and partitioned it to D: and E:. This worked. I changed the backup job to limit file sizes to 4GB. This worked.

So I had everything swapped over and successful backups happening to the E: drive (now the internal 1TB drive primary partition).  Reason for this is that I wanted to keep Ghost's backup versioning and then protect the backup by using Carbonite to backup the backup online :)

...then I decided to change the backup folder name and change the file size limit to 2GB. This time I decided to just delete the backup job and create a new one. This is when everything fell apart. There are no backups but Ghost 9 shows the C: drive (only) as already being included in a schedule. The Ghost console shows no backup jobs, and the history shows 1 base and 1 incremental on 2/2/08. The Drives display shows the C: D: and E: drive with the C: drive with the icons showing a backup or that it's in a schedule or something. So I can't create a new backup job/schedule,

Add/Remove Programs shows the following for Norton:
  Norton GoBack 4.02 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier (Sysmantec Corporation)
  Norton WMI Update

When I explore the SystemWorks install disk there is a folder for GHOST and GHOSTNT.
In the GHOST folder the readme txt has the header:

So the question is this: I running Ghost 9 now. Is this where I got it from? If so I can re-install. If I got Ghost 9 through an upgrade or purchased separately I can't find the install and have apparently lost it. In this case I would like to do anything I can to avoid uninstalling.

I'm not adverse to upgrading and buying Ghost 10 or Ghost 12 but I think I've read that some of the capabilities of Ghost 9 are not there in the later versions? maybe the expand to fill unallocated space or shrinking an image to the partition size?

SystemWorks 2003 provided you with Ghost 2003 - I know, because I've used it.  Ghost 9.0 was released in 2004 and is included in SystemWorks 2005: http://www.symantec.com/press/2004/n040914a.html.  If you have the install disc for SystemWorks 2005 and it is not just an upgrade, you can remove all instances and reinstall.  Unfortunately, Ghost 9 is not backward compatible with previous versions and won't restore older archives.

I would also not use GoBack, as it introduces it's own partitioning scheme and could make your drive unrecoverable by most utilities if it fails.

Ok. GoBack is disabled. I guess the readme.txt in the ghost directory on the install disk is just old?
It looks like I need to uninstall and re-install Norton System Works Premier as that is all that shows in Add/Remove Programs. I don't see any separate uninstalls for the Norton stuff on the start menu.

I checked and Norton Ghost 9 is still available for purchase on Amazon.com -- just in case.
I do have my original install disk for SystemWorks 2005 Premier so we're good to go I guess. Let's say I don't get Ghost 9 back. Would you recommend re-buying Ghost 9 or the current Ghost 12? They're both about the same price with the ghost 12 discount for having any Symantec product. Hopefully I'll be back in just a little while :)

I have both Ghost 9 and Acronis True Image 8 - I like Acronis because it lets me explore the image file and do incremental backups, but Ghost 9 is powerful, too.  Both have support for RAID, which I needed, so it's a matter of preference.  No experience with Ghost 12, but make sure it handles Ghost 9 backups before you go that route.

Ok, I'm back -- sort of. The SystemWorks uninstall has a modify option to selectively add or remove components.
Uninstalled GoBack, restart
Uninstalled Ghost, restart
Insert original Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier disk
No separate option for Ghost so "Install SystemWorks" and you get the modify option.
Select Ghost, install and instant error
"The installation encountered an error and was unable to complete the modifications"  no details
Browsed the disk to the Ghost folder and ran the GHOST.MSI -- it installed Ghost 2003   ):
I have no idea where I got Ghost 9 from so it looks like I'll have to buy it again.  Odd that Ghost 9 was integrated into the SystemWorks main console. If I ran the SystemWorks main app, selected the button for Ghost and then ran the option it was the ghost 9 console that came up? Sigh... these things happen.

Any other thoughts? I'll browse for a while for comparisons of Ghost 9 and later versions.

It might have been a SystemWorks 2005 upgrade, but having Ghost or Acronis is worth the cost the first time you need that backup, so buy it if you have to.  You are sure the backups are from Ghost 9 and not an earlier version? - if they're earlier, Ghost 9 won't be able to read them.

I guess it must have been an upgrade. Naturally live update doesn't do anything now.
I figured I'd cleanup and uninstall ghost 2003. Uninstall doesn't work. Just completes instantly and everything is still there. Went and uninstalled it by manually deleting in regedit. Not recommended, that took forever and now I have carpal tunnel syndrome. Nothing exploded.

I'm pretty sure they're Ghost 9 backups. I used the Ghost 9 console to restore the D backup/image to the drive I just put in. I guess that wraps it up. Thanks.
