using tar with tape drives

Does anyone now have to tell tar to switch to the next time in the stack. Any time a fold or something is over 20G it error. So I need to be able to tell tar to switch to the next time. The OS that I'm running on is RedHat ES 5.0 Server.

Thanks

use option --multi-volume when tarring:
$ tar --create --multi-volume --file=/dev/tape files
