help copying recorded dvds to computer

i recently copied my vhs tapes to dvdrw dvd's via my dvd recorder..when i transfer the several .vob files onto my hard drive, i can play all of them, EXCEPT the first one.  they all work fine when i change them to .mpg files.  i saw on some webpage that i could change the .vob to .mpg and they would play in movie maker, and it's true.  but i cannot get movie maker or media player to play the first file of the bunch. this happens on all the dvds i recorded. please help.
