Can i reset the administrator password ?

I'm looking for a way to reset the administrator password on a Lotus Notes 6.5 server.

The big problem is that the technician who was working on that server disappeared with the password list.  Is there a possible way to reset the password without the account information ?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I am afraid the password you are trying to reset will be high level password that is of administrator in this case try with some third party tools
As in terms of lotus its not possible to reset it straightly so use some third pary tool or password recovery tools

Hi Conceptum,

Asking for assistance with defeating security is an iffy prospect.  I had to pause and read the member agreement before responding with anything. Having said that, I have used a utlity before to reset XP admin passwords.  Since it is public knowlege, posted on the internet, and discussed fairly frequently regarding admin password resets, I think it's okay for me to share with you.  I don't know how it will work on other platforms, like server OSs.

BartPE also boasts a pasword restore program. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/  and http://www.bootcd.us/BartPE_Plugin_Details/394/Change-Administrator-Password.html

Good luck.

My problem is not to reset the administrator password of Windows.  My problem is on the Lotus Domino server part.  The administrator account information have been lost.  And the guy who was in charge of it is nowhere to be found...

Unfortunately, any server that is newer than R5 is virtually impossible to break into.

You will need to start guessing passwords, or do a complete reinstall.

I hope this helps !

Well it depends as i am crtified ethical hacker and i have crecked so many password via brtute force attack though dictionary attack takes time as well but it works only thing is you need to have passion and knowledge of what you are doing

Do you have any passwords at all? for example do you have password to the certifier ID or CA ? Can you create new accounts on the system at all?

Depending on the answers you might be able to create new account and make this new account to be server admin... There are also several other tricks that would be possible depending on availablity of the certification ID etc

as someone mentioned if you have the certifier ID passwords then you can create a new account. I've never seen a brute force attack work well with Notes because lotus puts a delay on each failed login attempt to prevent password guessing.

Do you have local or physical access to the server? There is a lot you can do from the server standpoint that may grant you access.

OK
Let me do a bit of r&d on it as far as i know i have tried succesfully on may os like linux and as secure as mac with succesful brute force attack to gain password

not saying that it can't be done, just will take a while. Most people go for the internet password on the server vs. attacking the ID file

hi
the issue with the user is password i rec not the time as dont forget please that its a server holding some important data reinstalling will lose all of it as even though you will do backup you wont get most of it as you dont have administrator permission so bkup will run those which comes under tht users permission you are loggin in as...
Thnx

keep in mind they are talking administrator password for an application (Lotus Server), not the OS. The OS is windows and you can still backup the data with the windows administrator password.

HI
i dont know what you mean of os is windows but os stands for operating system and i dont want to go so low in terminology as my terminologies are far clear so os not only includes windows but basically all the interfaced systems i.e. linux as well mac as well and in this case lotus as well so for example what you call windows 2003 server edition ----- its a type of operating system (os)
Sorry if i am rude
Issue is to resolve the password side and trust me i have been thorugh all os and even i have cracked password of mac administrator account as well for anyone who wants to know mac is the secure os than any other even than lotus

i'm just going to go back to the original question,

Conceptum, do you have physical access to the server and can log in?

OK
i think noone has any suggestion
asker can you please try this as i take cracking the password is alwayz a last stage so try with easy and simple steps and then complex steps only if you cant get what you wanted with simple steps
so please try this and reply back i think we will lead you to your destination by end of the day if i remained on my desk and my all server remained intact and healthy ...
PLEASE TRY THIS:
Unless you had set up an ID escrow agent (R4) or password recovery (R5), you may be out of luck. There is no feature to "reset" a password in a Domino/Notes ID file. However, all is not lost. Do you still have the Certifier ID and its password? If so, you can make a new administrator ID with the same username. That is the easiest route.

Conceptum,

The easiest thing for you to do is to at least try to get the certifier password from the old admin, and also the admin ID password.

Vishal, it is obvious from your comments that you know little about Notes. Security is really quite different. It is all based around something like X.509s, and the only password is one that unlocks the certificate store.
