Hi,

This is the server 'instance' that relays SMTP, or Internet, email.

Depending on your version of Exchange Server, it may or may not have the open SMTP relay set as open.  What you need to do is go to the Microsoft website and check the documentation in the knowledge-base for your version of Exchange.

If the relay is set to open, then it doesn't take any hacking to use it to forward mail.

There will be step by step guides on how to set this up securely.

Good Luck,

Exchange will create a default SMTP virtual server on installation. Only thing you need to worry about is if there are a bunch of unknown IP addresses in the relay restrictions on the virtual server. Ideally, you could only have the servers IP in the Granted list - with the "allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay regardless of the list above" option ticked.

Cheers,
Matt
