Every time I try to open internet explorer 6 i get a message box saying the IEXPLORER.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There was a patch from microsoft (kb942615) that broke IE6, It's possible you have that applied.

There is another patch that fixes it.  Get it here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946627

Upgrading to IE7 will also correct this.

Hello vickybrown2,

1. An addon may be interfering. Disable Addons.  Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced tab.  Uncheck "Third party extensions". Click Ok. Reboot computer.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Click OK.

3. Reset IE settings.  Go to Control > Internet Options > Programs.  Click on "Reset Web Settings" button. Go to Advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults" button. Go to Security tab and move the bar to Medium or Default. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

4. If no joy, check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall, antispyware, ad-blocker, popup blocker, and all Norton programs.

5. If no joy, run the System File Checker to repair any broken system files.  Go to Start > Run and type sfc /scannow
and hit OK.  You will need your Windows XP CD when asked.

6. If no joy, repair or reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

With Windows 2000, you can reinstall IE.

1. Perform a repair of Internet Explorer. From Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer and highlight it. Click on the Add/Remove button. When the IE Tools menu comes up, select Repair. Click OK.

2. If repairing does not work, uninstall and reinstall IE. At the same IE Tools menu, select "Restore the previous Windows configuration". Then reinstall Internet Explore.

You can also access the IE Toolbar by clicking Start > Run and type
