My 2003 DC is giving me all kind of errors and I would like to rebuild it and wipe it clean.  How to I go about doing this.   I have another server that is configured as a DC on the network but I am not sure how to tell if it is working the way it should.   I would like to make it the primary DC while I rebuild the current one and then switch back once everything is done.  Is this something that can be done and is it very difficult.

First off, make sure replication is working.  Transfer all FSMO roles to the working server.  Make the working server a global catalog.  Force replication.  Make sure that both servers agree on FSMO role holders and that the working server is a GC.

The process can be a little long, but, you do not want to have to rebuild AD because of a replication issue.  If you are having problems transfering FSMO roles, there is a way to seize them, however, it should be used as a last resort.
