How to Back up using BE 11D across Separate VLANS

Equipment :
SAN 4/8 Fibre Switch connecting a
Windows 2003 Backup Server with 2 NICS and
HP StorageWorks "Robot" with 2 x LTO4 drives
Ideal Solution :
Set the second NIC on the BE 11D 2003 Server to a separate VLAN eg 10.99.1.x
Set all the secondary NIC cards in all servers that are to be backed up via remote agent to 10.99.1.x
Isolate the "Backup VLAN" from the rest of the network.
Current state :
Over live network, backup working fine. All correct drivers/patches installed.
When Selecting from BE11D "BACKUP VLAN" NIC and choosing the specified subnet 10.99.1.0, the job gets as far as pre-processing and then the following error occurs
e000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.
Second NIC Card in BE11D Server : IP Address 10.99.1.2, SM 255.255.255.0, No GW Set
Second NIC Card in BE11D Server : IP Address 10.99.1.1, SM 255.255.555.0, No GW set
