"unknown devices"

A buddy of mine has a Toshiba Satellite M55-S135 with a slight problem.  He had reformatted and installed Windows XP back on the system.  Upon re-installing, his device manager has listed seven "unknown devices" on his laptop, two of them being "Ethernet controller", one being a VGA controller, a pcmcia controller, and 2 others.   I had tried Toshiba's website for drivers and updates from a different computer since this one will not connect to the internet, but the most recently dated one was 2005, which didn't work.  Is there any websites or recommendations you guys have to offer about the situation?  Thank you.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
