Can you install the printer under the Ports section of the printer by selecting USB (Virtual port).
I've also had success by opening My Computer, Hardware and Device Manager.
Once you locate the printer, right click and select Properties. Under the Driver tab, select Update Driver. From here you can point the printer to a different driver. I've had success adding drivers in this manner where the same driver addition through the normal means failed.
You may also need to uninstall and disconnect the printer.
Reboot. Log on and then reboot again.
Once logged in, try the printer installation again.

When I went into the ports section, there were no USB ports listed.  There was an Add Port feature but I've never added one.  How would I do that?

Are you saying that when you update the driver you can assign the port through device manager?  Sorry if I', not getting a basic concept but I'm not familiar with having to troubleshoot hardware install issues.  I installed off the full downalod from HP.  there were just drivers on the site as well for this printer model.  Should I download and update the driver pointing to these new ones and assign the USB port?

The uininstall  didn't work but I may not have done the reboot.  I spent all day working on this with other problems and can't remember.  I'll try it again.

We need to take a step back.
Make sure the printer is uninstalled.
Then select Restart.
Log on.
Log off and restart again.
Install the printer per the manufacturers directions.
Some printers require the software to be installed prior to the printer being connected to the system.
Once the printer is installed test.
If the test fails, go into Device Manager and locate the Universal Serial Bus Controllers (Towards the bottom of the menu).
Expand this to see if your printer is listed and listed without yellow exclamation marks, etc.
