Cannot install latest Adobe Reader download

OS, Windows XP, home, Dial-up.
I downloaded the latest Adobe Reader 8.0.1, but it refused to install. I cannot tell you the exact error message as this would required waiting one and a half hours while I downloaded again.

The problem seems to be the old 6 version which has left updates 1, 2 and 3 in Add or Remove. I have tried to remove the 6 version from Add and Remove with no success. Although they are recorded in Add or Remove, they are nowhere to be found on my computer.

The error message that appears when I try to install Adobe Reader 8.0.1 tells me that it cannot find the route to adobe reader 6.0.1 and I believe it is the inclusion of these non-existent files in Add or Remove that is causing the problem.
When I attempt to remove the Adode 6 entries I get the message" The feature that you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable."

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Install Adobe Acrobat 6 again and then un-install it.

Thank you Keith, Brians answer saved me time as I only had to download Version 8.1.2.

no problem glad I could help :)
To save time you might want to talk to a friend or relative and use there computer to burn the installer to CD that way you don't have to spend hours downloading it.

Maybe even a local public library not sure what the rules are at yours some allow you to burn some don't
