error 421 message rejected

Hi runnning SBS and exchange 2003.  about a week ago started having this problem.  Mail sits in out queue.  i clean everything out and restart the server and the connection is ok for awhile.  then later it will queue again.  also if sending from a pop account inside the network it gives the same error.  no mail will go out via my isp. in exchange i am using my isp as smart host.  cannot seem to get dns to work well enough.  i have tried to telnet and get the same error. this has got me stumped.

any ideas?

Could you tell me about your real domain name so i can run some DNS related tests?

the internal domain is called ashgroup
external domain is ashgroup.com.au.  none of which is hosted on this server.
they use the pop connector and pull email into exchange from an external host.
they use mail.bigpond.com (AUS ISP) as smart host smtp connector.

Your problem seems to be a connection problem between your exchange server and the smart host. Are you able to connect to your smart host from your server? Is your server able to resolve DNS names?

Big Business Goals? Which KPIs Will Help You

The most successful MSPs rely on metrics – known as key performance indicators (KPIs) – for making informed decisions that help their businesses thrive, rather than just survive. This eBook provides an overview of the most important KPIs used by top MSPs.

yes i agree the problem is between my server and mail.bigpond.com (smart host)
i can ping the smart host.  it replies.
i cant telnet mail thru.  get the same error.
i can ping google address and it resolves the name
note this also happens to internal pop accounts.  using the same isp as the outgoing mail server.
i get the same error in outlook with a pop account.  seems any mail trying to be sent out via mail.bigpond.com is not going thru.
if i restart everything, recreate the smtp connector sometimes it works for awhile then just dies again after a few hours.  users arent glogging it with massive email attachments.  there are only a few users. 5 - 10.

Contact your ISP to find out the problem, do you have user authentication set to use the smart host?
Just curious, why are you using a smart host?

rick81Author Commented:
yeh am waiting to hear back from the ISP.  user authentication is not set on the smart host.
am using a smart host b/c i cannot get DNS to work for exchange.  Just queues also.

Look, if u decide not to use smart host, i will help you with DNS. I hate seeing people handing their powers to their ISPs. What is it that is not working for you when it comes to DNS?

rick81Author Commented:
if i could just get mail out either method is fine with me.  i just need to get it working.
with the DNS it just sits in the queue.  does not move.  im lost as to why

What type of connection you have (DSL,Cable,T1)and what kind of IP address (static, dynamic)?

rick81Author Commented:
adsl 1500/256
dynamic ip

isaman07Commented:
Ok, you either get a dynamic ip dns service likeDynDNS or get a static IP address. Ifd you can't do both, then contact your ISPto see if you need to set a username and a password for the smart hosr, cause mosr of ISPs require authentication to use them as a smart host (your internet account username and password).
Keep me posted.

ive got a noip service setup.
i will put a username and password on the smart host and see if that works.
this still doesnt explain how it has been wokring before?
also does not explain y i get the error with a standard pop account aswell.  with or without auth

just cleared the queue and rebooted the server.  mail is now going out.  fresh mail.
also can send via an internal pop account.  same thing has happened before though.  only a matter of time before it queues again.  any ideas.

OK wait a bit to see if it will start queueing back. Contact your ISP.
