BackUp Fails also receive Unreadable media on some tapes
Dear Experts,
We use ArcServe 11.1 (build 3200) for backing up data.
I started having issues last week. We run differenetial back-up on Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu amd Full backup on Friday. About a week ago I submitted a Fri full back-up tape to my boss. I had replaced the Friday tape with a brand new tape. Before removing the tapes, I right-clicked on Overland, Dismounted the tapes, replaced the tapes (we have four sets of tapes that get rotated), mounted the tapes and usually that`s all i have to do. Mon - Thu back-ups ran fine. Friday back-up failed and I received Unreadable Media on Friday tape. I dismounted the tape, pulled out the tray, reinserted the tray, mounted the tapes, formatted Friday tape and Unreadable media dissapeared from Friday tape. When I came in to the office on Monday, I found that Friday back-up failed. Anyway, i thought that the tape may have been bad.... Except the next day when I came in - Monday back-up failed also.
I dismounted the tapes, removed the tape tray, reinserted the tape tray, mounted the tapes again.
Then all 5 tapes receive UNreadable Media. I dimount/mount tapes, remove tray, format all 5 tapes.
Verified that the tapes received the serial numbers, located the serial numbers for Mon - Fri tapes in Save Set and moved the tapes to Scratch set. Tuesday`s backup worked, so I thought issue was resolved.
Wednesday`s backup failed. Well. There are two jobs, 1 for each server. The DC got backed-up but the file server partially failed. In DB there are 3 sessions for file server:
1 - Network Drives - backup incomplete
2 - User personal drives = Back-UP finished
3 - Failed.
I'm unable to reboot the server during the day and I'm new to this.
Can somebody explain what`s happening and how to resolve it. It just started happening since I formatted a new tape... Well from what I know it just started happening, since I recently took a new job.

You also want to make sure you are using a cleaning tape on the drive on a regular basis. I really only work with libraries where we automate the cleaning process, but this also needs to be done on stand alones. Look for logs on the driver errors. Cleaning or repair/replace may be required.

Well that does not always hold true.
For the old QIC and 8mm drives regular cleaning kept them running for ever. However with the DLT and LTO drives they are designed to notify the application via Tape Alert which ARCserve supports.
So when ARCserve with the library option is configured to have a cleaning tape in the library and either a DLT or LTO drive is used the drive will notify ARCserve when it needs to be cleaned and ARCserve will automatically clean the drive.

I pulled up the tape.log, I will paste the recent activity below, as you can see it has to be the problem. I'm just not sure of what to do to get it working.
What is the proper way of loading and prepping the tapes for back-up ? Should I erase the tapes that are being reused or format them after mounting tapes?
I still have to follow dovidmichele`s advise....

What is the proper way of loading and prepping the tapes for back-up ? Should I erase the tapes that are being reused or format them after mounting tapes?

To introduce a new tape for a backup set do a Quick Erase Plus on the tape and leave it in the correct tape Group for that job. ARCserve will automatically use the tape when needed and from then on will take care of formating and naming.

From Device I selected Overland and did the Quick Erase Plus on today`s tape. Now when I go to Device it is labeled <Slot: 4L><Blank Media> it has no S/N, ID or name on it.
If I select <Slot: 2><Tuesday> tape, below is what i see:

Also, I don't think Cleaning was performed for months. Is it possible that not cleaning has caused the back-ups to fail ?

Once the tape is formated again by the job it will be given a serial # and will retain that serial # until another Quick Erase Plus.

I will give it another shot, will introduce a brand new tape, QEP, format, name the tape and add tape to scratch set. I will update the news here tomorrow. I really hope it works this time.

If the library has more than one tape drive check the Database Device view and check each of the drives for errors to see if this could be limited to a specific drive.
Next check the Tape Engine log tape.log found in the LOG subdirectory for errors, even in summary mode errors will show up.
