Pix keeps hanging

I have a pix 501 that keeps hanging and prevents access into and out of the network. A hard reset brings it back to life. How can I troubleshoot the problem? How do I configure logging?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Can you give me more details please?
When I try to enable logging using PDM I get a message that it cannot communicate with the PIX. It seemed to login initially OK via PDM.

can you login via telnet to switch and issue:
show xlate to see nat translations
clear xlate to clear active nat translations. sometimes it is possible that translation table is filled up and no new connections extablished
