Advice on implementation 2

I am trying to write a program in JAVA that can open a song from a file (this i can do) and detect beats in a song. When it detects a beat it should say that a beat hasbeen detected and also count the number of beats in the song. My concern is how to start this type of code. What is the logic of the program in stages. Speedy advice would be very much appreciated. It may also be useful to code in Matlab.

Taking a look at the Java sound API would be a good starting point.

Perhaps splitting the music down into different frequency bands could be useful and then maybe a fourrier transform which could be used to look at a time window and if a large increase in the appropriate frequency band is detected; i.e. a beat, it could be recorded.
