How Install 3rd Party Software on the Mac

What is the correct way to Install new 3rd Party SW on the Mac/Leopard?
When I take the .DMG file and drag it to the Applications Folder (which I thought was how you Install something), it just "Moves" the .DMG file to that folder ...

You double click the dmg file and it mounts that disk image on the desktop, then either you can drag the item out of that folder into applications or in some cases there will be an installer inside that folder you can run.
