How do I get Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 to open? New install won't open. It will update, but main console won't open due to errors.

My first question!!

I just installed Trend Micro 2008 Internet Security, had 2007 version.  Tried updating, but missed the part for the serial #, so although install 'seemed' to go well, the main console wouldn't open.  It still won't, even after uninstalling and reinstalling several times.  It even updates protection, but won't open.  Receive error when I try: "An error has interrupted the task currently in progress.  Please restart your security software and try again."

I've been installing & uninstalling to try to get it to work.  Hover over the taskbar and it says "Trend Micro Internet Security needs your help to fix a problem."  That doesn't do me much good when it doesn't ay what type of problem or how to fix it.  
 
Any ideas?

try a system restore to a previous date, thene rinstall

I get nervous about that suggestion, haven't really performed that trick before.  Besides, would I lose any data that I've saved in my Office/Business Contact Manager since the restore date?  Also, are the steps to perform a system restore available somewhere for me?

Thanks nobus, I've gone to the links, but will have to take a better look later; urgent work is calling.  However, you've just made me realize how absolutely valuable this tool can be.  I'm guessing that computer-smart people like you use this tool often to undo anything new that causes any grief... at least until they can figure out how to make the new addition more compatible with their system.  Thanks, I'll let you know how it works out !!!

I did a system restore, but it hasn't really solved my problem.  I STILL went back and re-installed Trend Micro, but alas to only the same results. I'm going to go back to the source, at this point; format, reinstall OS, and start from scratch, hope for the best.  Already finished backing up my data.  I'm crossing my fingers that there are issues in my OS.  Thanks for the info, I'll use system restore from now on in the regular maintenance of my computer.  Issues arise, I can go back and look at what I've done.  Do you keep a log or something to record changes you've made to your system?  Thank you.

Oddly enough, the error messages in that story don't match mine, but it appears this may be an issue I'll have to look at further.  Maybe I'll need to use a different Internet Security, but Trend came highly recommended as a less cumbersome solution (not a resource hog), and I agreed it worked great for the previous year.  

How do I know if I have SP3?  (I seem to recall getting it.)  And, shouldn't I ALWAYS install the SP's, as they are rather important to the OS, right?  Finally, you don't know if Trend has that fixed, do you (story suggested it would be fixed in Feb '08.)

It's a roundabout solution, and I've now reinstalled the OS, all is good so far.  The beauty of nobus' advice is that I now have a really good tool to use going forward for issues like this one that arise.  Thanks, nobus!
