Allowing people to sign-up and then to login

I would like to allow people to sign-up on my application, something like a small form for them to fill in, and it sends that data to a database and holds it privately and securely.

Once successful i would like for them to be able to use this information they provided, mainly the username and password they entered to be able to login to the application and be granted access to a secure page that gets the data back from the database and displays all the information related to (thier username and password) that they signed up using.

So each and every person who signs up, when they login (only thier details that are linked to that username and password) are shown within the application.

Can anybody tell me how to do this and if it's possible, im a beginner so the very basics will need to be told.

Thanks for any help!

** Follow-up **

To give you more of an idea what i would like to do....

Let's say this is the sign-up form below:

First name:
Last name:
E-mail address:

Team name:

Now upon sending this i would like for it to be sent to a database and stored there so that when that person wants to login they use the username & password they entered and it logs them into the information they supplied when signing up, which i will display to them on the new application window once login is successful. (but it can only display details linked to that username and password) so nobody else can get access to that information.

Now for the login form...

(login button) (once pressed, if the entered username & password match our database records they are logged into a new application window showing them thier information only).

Any help would be great thanks. I hope you get the idea of what i'd like to do
