user unable to access mailbox

we have a user who is unable to access his Outlook 2000 mailbox after logging into the network with his network credentials. The error message that apprears is "unable to open your default e-mail folders. The attempt to log onto the MS Exchange Server computer has failed". If I login to the network as myself and manually add his mailbox (through mail in control panel), I can select his mail account and the mailbox opens fine. I added the user to the local admins group on the pc but was still unable to access the mailbox. I added the user to the domain admins group and was able to access the mailbox.  I created a test account using a copy of his account through Active Directory (renamed, of course) and was able to access the test mailbox. Any help is greatly appreciated...

In Active Directory Users and Computers...

Can you go to the properties of the user, then the Exchange Advanced tab, and click the MailBox rights button?  Make sure that SELF has Read and Full mailbox access permissions?
