Terminal Server 2003 & MSN Messenger 8.1 intermittent delays while typing messages

Problem:
Users encountering delays, sometimes disconnects while using MSN Messenger 8.1 on terminal server 2003, average user has over 100 people on his/her contact list, some users have over 200 in their contact list, one person has close to 500 in their contact list.

While they are communicating with their customers they frequently have these intermittent delays and sometimes disconnects where the users have to relogin.

Environment:
2003 active directory environment, terminal server 2003, office 2003, trendmicro officescan server 7.3, 2 dualcore amd processors, 8gb ram, hardware raid-10, gigabit network for all servers, 100mbit for all endusers, endusers are connecting through Remote Desktop Client or through 2X thinclients.  Right now this terminal server only has 5 users on it.

my documents folders are redirected to iSCSI storage using openfiler.

internet connection:
pfsense firewall, xeon 2ghz, 1gb ram, dual wan connections, T1 1.5/1.5, DSL 8/1, using policy routing, users on terminal server are utilizing dsl connectivity for surfing the net and MSN, network utilization is below 30%, cpu utilization is below 15%

I have no idea what is going on, I am trying to tell them it could be due to their large number of contact list or could be the msn server their account is housed in.

I have searched the web for a long time now and at this point I am looking for help from the technical community.

Thanks,
Mark

What is your latency like?

Sounds like the session is dropping - while the session is hanging can you ping the TS?

yes, no problems with response from ping

During the 'delay' are the users able to do anything else?  Such as switch focus from Messenger to another app?

Simplify Active Directory Administration

Administration of Active Directory does not have to be hard.  Too often what should be a simple task is made more difficult than it needs to be.The solution?  Hyena from SystemTools Software.  With ease-of-use as well as powerful importing and bulk updating capabilities.

response from some users is that when people on their contact list are logging in or trying to send a message they see the lag/delay in their IM interface.

users have yahoo IM and they are not encountering these issues, only MSN

Has this problem always existed or is it a new issue?

during the delay only msn locks up the other apps work fine, problem seems to be more prevalent with msn 8.x with msn 7.5 it did not seem to exist, problem is that they cannot use msn 7.5 anymore, microsoft forces upgrades.

latency is 20ms-40ms to the internet, internal latency is <1ms

I talked to Microsoft and it seems that since this is a Consumer service not meant for the Enterprise it would be better serverd deploying OCS 2007.

At this point I have not found an answer to this ongoing problem and I am not sure I will, but I would like to leave this question open for some time maybe, just maybe someone has experienced this and could help.

Thanks,
Mark
