The battery cannot be identified" - on Dell Inspiron E1505 - won't charge, only works under AC power. Battery charges outside the computer, but whenI put it in the labtop it is not recognized. It's an original dell battery. Computer shuts down immediately when I unplug the powercord and the loaded battery is in.

Sounds like a defective battery.

battery works fine in another dell computer. I was getting error messages prior to battery not being recognized at all about hitting F3 key at start up, b ut battery was still charging at that point.
Does the battery from the other Dell work in yours?

Its pobably just shook up. If not, it may have gotten overheated and melted a component.
