Access to IE password-protected directory by form?

I've recently discovered that IE has for some time now disallowed use of the "user:password@site.com" URL syntax for logging in to a password-protected directory.

That said, is there any remaining way to create a link or login form that will enable access to a .htaccess-protected directory -- bypassing the default username/password popup -- from a Web page on Windows Internet Explorer?

Internet Explorer does not support user names and passwords in Web site addresses (HTTP or HTTPS URLs)

Assuming you have seen this, but if not, several ideas included, for developers. Or even a local machine reg mod to fix the way it works......
