Is it possible to have multiple DNS names on the smae Windows 2003 Server SP2 Enterpise edition,

Hi,

Can some one please tell me if its possible to have multiple server names (DNS names) on the same Win2003 DC SP2 Enterprise Edition.  We have 2 Win2003 DCs 1st one is running DHCP, DNS and ADS, printer server, RADIUS authentication services.

I need to have this domain controller to be able to be accessible by 2 different dns names.  for Example: original name "serve1"  i need to make this server be accessible with "serve1" and for example "accounting".  I just want to make sure that if i add a DNS entry with additional DNS name if it will cause any problems or connectivity issues.

Thanks a lot in advance for all help.

Thanks,

Not a problem if the Host names are pointing to the same IP.

Thank you very much for you confirmation, I thought the same thing, but wanted to double check since the server is domain controller which is running a DNS server.

Thanks again.
The only time this is a bad thing is typically when you have a server equipped with two nics and each is in a different subnet.  For example

NIC 1 - 192.168.0.1
NIC 2 - 10.10.10.1

You wouldn't want to register both in DNS because clients would try to hit both of them at random and may not have a route on the gateway to reach the network that doesn't match the clients.

Otherwise you can have as many names all pointing to that same IP as you want (as long as that is the intended purpose).
thanks, that is exactly the purpose, i need to move some data from a very old server to the main file server, but that data is linked to the older server name.
You're golden.
I just tried to shutdown the old server and point the dns to the new ip with the same host name, when i tried to map a drive to the share or access it by the share by using a new dns name I get the following error.

Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect.

I looked it up online, it states that i should rejoin the computer to the domain, i can't really do it since the server is a Domain Controller.

Anybody has any ideas?

Thank you.
