HELP! Windows XP doesnt detect my passport drive...

I bought a western digital passport external hard drive a few months back and didn't face any problems regarding its usage, now when i connect it to my pc with win xp, it just hangs or my display turns off like rebooting without shut down and my power led and busy led turns on continuously, this problem has been encountered only today, even a day back i was using it without any problem...

I changed the cable and tried, but the same problem persists, also i booted ubuntu 7.1 from a live cd and tried  but it didnt even detect that such a hard disk is present,

its a 160 gb hard disk with 1 single partition(ntfs) and compression enabled.....

Please help, its very urgent.....

i suppose it just died.
check if you have any warranty, and have a replacement.
or open it, and hook the disk directly to the ide or sata connector of your PC; this will show if the disk is bad, or the enclosure - and will void your waarranty ...

Sounds like an issue with the USB ports. Check in the device manager for any marks next to the USB's. Try different USB ports to see if it is confined to certain ones. If your ports are dead and there are no issues in the device manager, it may be a motherboard problem, which seems to be indicated when you have tried Ubuntu. You may need to install a PCI card with USB ports.

I have an asus motherboard ELITEGROUP 865G-M8, which was bought nearly one and a half years ago, but my dealer quotes warranty for only a year, is that fine if i give it for service or just add a pci usb card??? Which one would you recommend??

nobusCommented:
the servicing would be a new motherboard, while a pci to usb card costs not much :

I added a new Intex PCI to USB card to my motherboard, but when i connect my hard drive to my pc, it says, USB device not recognized, and the same problem still exists in my previous port in my motherboard.... I am fed up with this problem, coz usb is the heart of my pc!!!

If you getting a message this when the hard drive is plugged into the new USB ports, then there may be an issue with the drive also. Have you tried any other USB devices in the new USB pci card?

Does the card support USB2.0
What operating system do you have, if XP do you have SP2 installed?

Are you using a separate power supply adapter with the hard drive?

Also check in the device manager and see if the USB pci card is identified properly.

does it work on another pc ?
but since it did not work with ubuntu - i still think it's dead (i just ran mine with ubuntu to verify)

Yeah it works fine with my friends pc....

Funny, it looks like a hardware issue and a software issue at the same time.
The screen shot shows the enhanced controllers which are for USB2.0, but why isn't it picking it up?
Have you checked the BIOS for a USB 2.0 setting being disabled.

nobusCommented:
ok - if it is ok on another PC, and does not work on yours, or even when you run ubuntu; you hardware is bad.
that is why i said to try a PCI card, but if the failure inhibits the card to work ok; you need a new mobo.
Does NOTHING work on the card? or only the disk ?

Checking the ECS driver page for this motherboard, there is an Intel OrangeWare USB 2.0 Driver available.
Scroll down this page to find it.

Yeah i made it and downloaded the file, when i tried to execute it, it says that you have the latest usb 2.0 drivers and just stops, any suggessions.... ?
0
nobusCommented:
from your screen shot, you have usb 2 installed; it just does not work
 try this :
remove all power from the PC for 30 minutes, restart and test
or : delete all USB entries from device manager, reboot and test
