Why don't you just install Ubuntu as a VM inside VmWare Server, which is free and works well if you have enough RAM? How much RAM do you have?

http://vmware.com

With that you can use both OS's at the same time, without needing reboots.

VMWare will run in windows, and then you can run your linux inside VMWare as a guest OS.  It will not interfear with Windows at all.

Wow, this has opened up a new world to me! Is it possible to configure the virtual Ubuntu to share data with windows. Like playing the same mp3's and accessing the same php-files?

Yes, you can use the LAN to connect from Ubuntu to the Windoze OS or vice versa. If you are going to connect to the Ubuntu OS you'll have to install Samba.

Where do you download LAN? (what lan do you mean ;-)

Local Area Network. VmWare creates a virtual network adapter so you can network the VM's and the Host OS. You don't download the LAN, iot is already there. It is also used to connect to the internet. Setup your Vista as server and then connect with the Ubuntu VM to that "Server" to use the data.
