How many CAL licenses do i need

I've just come in to a small IT department. They have 4 W2k3 servers with OEM licenses. they have approx 30 users and have 50 W2k3 CAL's.  I need to buy another server to act as a second DC(they only had 1). Do i have to purchase another 30 CAL's or do the ones already purchased cover this?

Thanks

Hi
Well that depends.
here you can find a lot of answers about the licensing.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/priclicfaq.mspx#E1F
But in your case you can look on license management to see how many license do you have installed and how many do you use (peak usage) if the peak usage is greather than your amount of license then you need to buy more.

If you are doing simple file/print sharing and do not have an open licensing agreement you will likely need to buy the licenses.  If you have 30 users active throughout the day, you will need 30.. if 10 are floaters then maybe you only need 20.

Hi!

Windows 2003 Server is licensed "per server" or "per user/per device". If you choose "per user" mode and have 30 users you need 30 "per user" CALs. If you have 30 users working on 15 computers, then you could chose "per device" mode and you would need only 15 "per device"  CALs. If you choose "per server" licensing and you have 30 users and 4 servers, you would need 120 CALs, this option is out of the question.
