Disaster Recover - How do you restore a server backup onto a new hardware configuration?

I have an old Gateway server with a motherboard that failed.  I was able to recover a backup image of the server.  The problem is, when I attempt to restore the image to the new replacement server, the startup files are referencing the old hardware configuration.  The difference between the two systems seems to be the RAID controller.  Is there any way of installing the old server image onto the new hardware configuration?  I'm guessing that I would need to modify the registry files in order to accomplish this.

The hard way is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249694/en-us, the easy way is to buy bare metal restore software that first strips-out the hardware part of the system and doesn't restore it. Backup Exec System Recovery might work but I'm not sure if it works with ntbackup restores.
