pc boots to blank screen with blilnking cursor after using partition magic's merge

MY pc has xp home edition sp2. I tried to merge two partitions on the same hard drive using partition magic and after the process i get blank screen wtih a blinking cursor. Nothing seemed to work. I can not access safe mode or last known configuration options. i ran all the tests and every thing in the system is fine. I ran windows recovery and that didn't do any help. I tried all the possible ways but i can't seem to get a hint if the os is still in there or gone. When i try to run recovery through windows cd, it shows xp home edition when it asks to choose the os to repair. Does that mean my os is still in there and i can retrieve my data? any help would be appreciated.

You should be able to run the repair on your os. It sounds to me like Partition magic currupted your partition table on your Hard drive. Running the repair, should repair this and make you system boot again.

Use UBCD4Win to boot and retrieve data files. Look at disk structure and see what you find.

i tried this too. every time i tried to boot from cd it just freezes on the cursor thing again. i burned the iso with nero 8.0.

The likely problem is that hard disk is not properly recognized and ESCD is causing boot failure. You should be able to boot from UBCD4Win with hard disk disconnected if that's the case. Give it a try to ensure there is not another hardware problem instead.

well i tried ubcd4win again without harddrive connected and it worked. it went through and everything was good. I attached hard drive and started but nothing. It started giving me an error " 00000006  exception" and there is a lot of error code below it. i tried without the harddrive again and still same error. some time it gives me this error and sometimes it won't start at all. Then it gave me this following error even it started to go through.  "inf file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 32768. setup cannot continue, press any key to exit.
i am not sure what to do. when i put this cd in my laptop it boots up pretty nicely.

This time, disconnect optical drive and try booting from hard disk.

I think we can conclude the hard disk is the culprit. I'll put on my thinking cap.

Weren't you able to boot from XP CD?

shanii24Author Commented:
yes i was able to boot from xp cd, i ran all the recovery tests from the cd earlier.

is there any other method to retrieve my data?

Try a Knoppix (Live Linux) CD. You can copy files to another internal hard disk or USB storage devices. Knoppix will read and copy NTFS files only. You cannot edit or delete.

I'm surprised that UBCD4Win won't boot and XP CD will.

Correction for clarity:

"Knoppix will read and copy NTFS files only" should read --- Knoppix will only read and copy NTFS files.

awesome knoppix worked. just one more question. is there any english version because the one i downloaded is not entirely in english. Thanks again.

That was the English web page  in link. Original version is in German. I don't recall too much being in German, but haven't used it in a while. UBCD4Win took its place. The Ubuntu live CD is another option but I prefer Knoppix.

Glad it worked for you.
