Can I load windows XP from USB CD/DVD Drive

My Compaq Pressario C300 laptop CD/DVD drive has failed, and I need to reload windows.  Can I install Windows XP using an external USB CD/DVD drive?  The BIOS boot order options include USB Floppy, USB Hard Drive and USB Diskette on Key.  I assume it has USB boot support, but does this extend to USB CD/DVD Drives?  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes - if the device is less than 3 years old - and seeing as it includes boot from usb hard drive - then definitely.

It should work.

If you can borrow an External USB drive ( CD/ DVD ) or even a Flash drive with the i386 directory on it, that is bootable
then that is all you really need.

Also you may be able to boot from a USB floppy that has drivers for a USB external CDROM drive.

If you do not need any data on the macine, wipe the bootable partition and  recreate it as FAT32, then you can copy the i386 directory and a minimal DOS boot, and eliminate the whole issue.

I hope this helps !

Hi Guys,
I don't have a floppy drve but the external USB CD drive worked well.  I needed to purchase one so was glad of the reassurance it would work.  Many thanks for your help.
Regards, Peter.
