With full paper tray, I am getting an error that says "out of paper".

I am trying to install a Kyocera Mita FS-3800N printer.  I have tried the drivers listed on the download site: http://usa.kyoceramita.com/KMAGlobalpub/jsp/Kyocera/download_center.jsp?prod=10158.  Specifically I have tried the KX and PCL driver, neither of which has worked to print.  I am so tried the KPDL driver.  With the KPDL driver and the KX driver when i select to print a test page it tries and then it says "out of paper" in the printer job list.  The tray is full and I added some sheets to the manual feed tray, same result.  The computer is windows XP Pro on a domain.

can you perform a test print from the console of the printer (not from your pc)?
\
I think this is more of a physical/sensor prob on the printer rather than the driver....

They also have something called a minidriver.... which is an old school driver system that doesnt use KPDL... (I think)...

I have no end of dramas with our 3800s and kyoceras nightmare drivers as well....... I feel your pain ;)

I was able to print the Menu Map from the console.  Which driver do you recommend we use, the minidriver? The office I am at has a Kyocera printer for every 2 of the support staff and one for every lawyer, and we are using a mix match of the PCL and the KX drivers, but I haven't tried the minidriver.

we are a law firm as well.....  we print tonnes of paper, so the kyocera saves us lot of money....  but causes lots of grief.... Do you use extra paper bins? envelope feeders??

these are the real killers ;)

is it just the one printer that is doing this... or all of them...

how are they shared? from a server?

After sending the print job, check the printer console. Are there any messages?

Have you checked the paper size is correct? It may be saying it's out of paper because the paper that is there is the wrong size.

Most of our printers are from a print server but n this case it is direct to the computer with a parrell cable.  All of the support staff have extrea bins and use the manual feeder for envelopes, but in the problem case it is just the one paper tray.

The only message onthe console is "Ready".  I have not checked the paper size yet.

there could be some prob with the drivers..... kyocera have something called Printer Deleter.... which deletes all the crap the drivers leave behind.... have u run this?

http://www.kyocera.com.au/files/1/Deleter.ZIP

also pls try a different cable... .USB perhaps.....

As this is a network printer, have you set it to communicate through the parallel port rather than the network interface? The PC may be talking to a printer that isn't listening.

CobraCatsAuthor Commented:
The printer is set to use the parralel port.  And is set for the correct paper.  This printer doesn't have a USB port.  I will have to try the deleter program next time becasue this user has gone for the day.

The other problem is I cannot find another paralell cable to try.

you said you had other printers that were the same? you cant swap cables with one of these and see what happens....

OR another thing you can try is plugging it into the network, and temporarily replace one of your other 3800s with it...

give it the same IP address as another 3800.... and turn off that one.... Then see if you can print to it...

Final fix was a driver change and a cable change, I couldn't grab another cable from another machine because sometimes they dont; want to share
