MS office 2003 Attachments unable to be opened

Signature field in OL 2003 was created in OL 2007.
Attachments created in Office 2003 and sent via OL 2003 are unable to be opened by some external recipients.
I need a resolution.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

They were Word 2003 files.

There was also a PDF attachment and an Office 2007 PPT attachment.  There was no recollection of an error message.

What does the signature have to do with it?

Is it all senders and all recipients?

The signature field was created with OL 2007 code which I suspect may have interacted with Office 2003 exe s and/or dll s to cause the issue.
Do you know if Office 2007 forces Office 2003 to share Office 2007 exe s and/or dll s?
Is the problem due to the attachments being a mixture of Office 2003 and Office 2007 attachments?
While resolution could be that simple, I need to know if program code sharing (if true) between Office 2003 and Office 2007 whether on the originating PC or on the local server or anywhere on the network causes the attachment issue.
I had the offending email with offending attachments sent to me.
I am able to open them as I have both Office 2003 and Office 2007 on my PC.
Additionally I have the downloadable Office 2007 Compatibility Pack reader on my PC.

However, some of the client's customers do not have Office 2007 nor the compatibility pack as I believe that they are the ones experiencing inability to open the attachments.
I realize that the compatibility pack for Office 2007 may be the resolution needed but appliying it by my client's customers is a political issue.

That will clearly be the problem.  Instead, get them to start saving documents in compatability mode, which will be able to be opened in Office 2003
