Hi
It just goes blank?
what colour does the screen go?
Does the PC stay on ,reboot or shutsdown?

You should try to repair Outlook Express and see if it still happens.

I think ur system has infected why b'coz it cannot be a ram problem as u said above that u can play games & all without any problem so i will suggest u to download a anti virus software & scan it properly.
I would say like u said it will happen when

Opening Outlook Express
Opening create new mail in Outlook Express
Opening Firefox

So i am thinking that there is some infected background executable file which is running.

So some good anti virus software will help u to kick out this problem.
most viruses will not cause a black screen or a crash. most viruses these days at trojons that want to keep the PC running and send back information so someone can take over it..

IF you dont have virus check then get one but i would say this is a crouptted dll or commong file to the appliactions
it seems a crossfire issue with XP, use driver sweeper, uninstall ATI drivers, make sure you updates other drivers and reinstall ATI. also monitor your temperature, overheat will cost blank screen.

Good luck

you can troubleshoot this by swapping out parts or devices, 1 by 1 or in groups.
you can also disable programs or services at startup :
start>run type msconfig
in the startup tab, click disable all
in the services tab, click hide MS services, then click disable all
reboot and test
you can also run a ram test, to be sure about the basics :   use memtest86+ from www.memtest.org
monitor temps with Speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Can your PS handle the load? calculate it here :  http://web.aanet.com.au/SnooP/psucalc.php
thats one thing i found about ati drivers they can be game specific...

i use to have to cange drivers becasue battle field 2 worked with one version but crahed the PC when running track mania.. where as the drivers that worked with track mania made battle filed 2 have purple artifacts in it!!

just becasue one game works dosent mean its not hard wear or drives.. all games put different loads and requests to the hard ware. you ahve to find what is common in all the applicatiosn that crase it.
Did you ensure that you have not enabled you Auto power option. Please check the power options from your control panel. Also check whether you have enabled any screensaver that causes this issue.
Please note second life is rife with bugs and malware. If your using it ensure you have some good protection enabled for both.

If you dont use av or spyware protection then get some on your machine and do a full check.

if tehse are clear def sounds like a video issue if teh screen goes blank most likely driver based but is strange that it is application specific, woul dbe more inclined to think bug

f-king:
Blank as in no power. (yet I don't get the no sign screen, power light still on)
System stays powered up but locked, G15 LCD screen locked as well)

shasunder:
Auto power of monitor was set to 30 mins
I don't thing it's that as is doen't go off at a set time
But I'll set it to never anyway

GizmoSLI:
I use a gatewatch 2 to watch the temp of my whole system

slam69:
Ture Second Life is one big 'bug' at time (just about as bad as Windows) but most the time it just crashes back to the desktop.  And this don't explain why it did it when open Firefox or Outlook

System locked (no blank screen, sound suck) last night while playing
Wheels of Steel American Long Haul

So I did a sound driver update, as well as a few other system drivers.
PCI driver, Mouse (Logitech G7) drivers, monitor drivers.

As this is an error that don't happen all the time (I hate these types of errors)
It maybe a while until I see just anything I do helps.
any comment on my post ?

Firefox and outllok both tend to initiate internet conenction as does second life so you could be lookin at that as your root cause but as the fault is intermittant v difficult to say.

relying on the fact that second life will only cause a crash back to desktop is a litle risky i see your running avast and spybot.. whats your firewall
Try running with only one video card to see if it still happens. If it does then try the other card.
nobus, f-king:

I like to try software side of this before I start poking around in my case
(not the easies thing to poke around in)
Downloaded sandrasoft" (SIS) , haven't run it yet

slam69:
I use the firewall that build into my D-Link (DL-704P) Router

DevilWAH:

I rolled back to 7.1

Turn off avart..
Removed everything that had to do with ATI (drivers ect)
Rebooted
Installed 7.1 drivers
Rebooted
Turn avast on..

Crossfire is on
Left the overdrive, locked

Everything seem to be going ok, so far.

BTW Do I need Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistribtable??
iposted software things...
