How to make vsftpd......secure!?

Hi all,

Simple question (least I think!), I have vsftpd running on a fedora server.  My situation is this....currenty, when people log in to our server through WINDOWS explorer they get prompted with a username and password.  They authenticate and they see the folders they are supposed to.  Great.  But if they use INTERNET explorer they are prompted with a username and password to which they fill in correctly, they login and then see a list of folders in the C:\.  If they are curious, they click on the links and they are able to browse freely into other peoples directories and see/download the content in these folders!

I am simply trying to stop this scenerio from happening in internet explorer.  Also if you log in successfully in firefox, you see the correct folders, but there is a link to "Go up a directory", if you keep clicking you can get to the root of C:\ again.

How can i stop this from happening? Is it a setting in the vsftpd.conf file? If so...here is mine:

The option

chroot_local_user=YES

will strict the user to his/her home dir

The option

anonymous_enable=NO

is to disallow guest / anonymous login (basically guest / anonymous login will let any one to login to your ftp server with no password. This is only for download sits - which is not your case. So, you may disable guest login).

So, yes both.

I have literally just changed the chroot option to yes (as the guest was already no) and it wont allow you to log in

I think the following option should be commented

chroot_list_enable=NO

Also, comment option

Please ignore last comment. Here a working vsftpd.conf file (please make sure it is in the right dir. On my Fedora 8 it is under /etc/vsftpd dir)

SO change it back to chroot_list_enable=NO instead of the suggested chroot_list_enable=YES and comment it out

Yes, rename your file (e.g. mv vsftpd.conf vsftpd.conf.myfile) and put mine there.

I have commented out the chroot_list_enable and added chroot_local_user and I think that seems to have done it!

Why is this?

If you see the link given before, the chroot_list_enable is to allow only certain users listed in a file (you may see the file name from the link).

The chroot_local_user is to restrict users to their home directories.
