Are you using the latest version of Exmerge?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=429163ec-dcdf-47dc-96da-1c12d67327d5&displaylang=en

If so do you have sufficeint access permissions to the Exchange mialboxes you are trying to extract?  Check the log files where ExMerge is installed as it stores any errors in the log which are usually quite useful.

If all else fails connect a outlook client to the server and copy the mail to the pst - you will have to do this if the mailboxes are over 2gb anyway.

I have seen this happen before and have got round it by installing a different version in a different location - if that does not work can you install it on another server and run from there

i dont understand-where else to install it?

I've run it from a different Windows 2003 server. Download the latest version of exmerge and extract to a folder, then before you launch it you will need to add "exchmem.dll " to that folder. That DLL can be found in the \exchsrvr\bin folder on your exchange server.

Make sure (you probably already have) that the IS is running on the server with the mailbox you are trying to extract.

i have two things which im not sure about it:

i have exchange admin rights, should i add myself to exchange full admin?

how about the mailbox i want to extract: does that one have to be in the recovery storage group to extract?
or do i have to disable the user account before?

yes, i tried to extract from a running exchange server, a running IS, that is.

I believe the rights are fine the way they are. You can connect to either a production database or a recovery storage group.

No need to disable the account.

i have full exchange admin rights now-do i also need admin rights locally?

each time i start with exmerge and choose a users mailbox to extract; it crashes down.

why is this happening? thats annoying as hell...

Some suggestions:

1. Try from another workstation. You can run exmerge from XP as well.
2. Try different mailboxes to see if there's an issue with that one mailbox
3. When you start exmerge, specify the DC to use if you haven't already

I'll look into that error a little more thoroughly.
