Close down and archive off contents of a no longer needed public folder

HI,

A no longer need to maintain a public folder, and would like to close it down.

However, before I do so, I would like to archive off the contents to, ideally a central location like a .pst file.

Can this be done?

Yes, you can archive a public folder! I believe in Exchange 5.5 deleting a public folder is near impossible, but made relatively simple in later versions of Exchange.

See this useful article on public folder best practices -

HI Pete - I don't see anything on either link about archiving off the contents of the public folder...

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

It was more aimed at being information on things you may not have considered when deleteing Public Folders! :) Worth a read before you do move on, just in case there's some things you weren't aware of (especially under the deleting public folders section)...

Archiving public folders using the Archive function is not possible as far as I know. Probably the best idea is to use a 3rd party software such as - Symantec Enterprise Vault (I've seen this one mentioned in a previous similar question) for example.

Or check out the following - http://www.slipstick.com/exs/archive.asp. At least one of the products here "Archive One" mentions being able to archive contents of public folders, however I have never personally had any experience with this piece of software.

Hi All - I don't want to purchase 3rd party software, I want to be able to archive off all the emails into a .pst file (or a public folder equivalent) and then close down the account, ideally all from within Exchange.

Can anyone assist? Thanks.

You could try creating a .pst in Outlook, and then manually copying all the contents of the Public folder into it using drag and drop...

Only way I know of to do this. Wait for someone elses reply if you will! :)
