all .exe's are opneing in notepad

When I try to right click on my computer and select properties, notepad opens the file rundll32.exe.
When I go to run -> msconfig or regedit, they both open in notepad.
When I log on to the server, notepad opens the file ctfmon.exe in notepad.
When I try to open internet explorer, the same thing happens, it opens in notepad.

When I try to browse to C:\windows and each location of each file, the same thing happens,
everything opens in notepad.  All exe's open in notepad.

Just found a site that has a fix for this.

Go to

Check the registry of the machine with the problem and look to see if there has a key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe

You will need to check the registry remotely from another machine.  Start Regedit and then connect to the machine with the problem.

pcandler, thanks, yes there is an entry for the .exe, but for application = reg_sz and the data = notepad.exe

What application do I change it to?  I attached a word document showing all tree entries for that.

Regarding running that file, I already did and it was for XP only, as I ran it, and it didn't fix anything.

I checked 2 other servers, and none of them have an .exe entry in the above plase where you mentioned.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe

Perhaps that's the wrong place to look in?

Great to hear, sorry didn't reply I was asleep :).

Somehow you associated exe with Notepad.
As a precaution, scan your server for both spyware and viruses.
