Microsoft Office missing file (SKU111.CAB)

When I try to run Microsoft Office, I get the "A required installation file SKU111.CAB could not be found". After I cancel it out a couple times, the Office program I want runs, but it goes through this "installer" and then the error message each time.

I cannot for the life of me find our Office discs (we just moved and everything is all over the place). Obviously, Office is loaded on my computer because it starts up after going through the messages and canceling them out.  However, I am sure this specific issue is related to the link I put below in which I think my computer feels that a profile is trying to get into Office when it never has before - in reality, it has, it just doesn't realize it.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23179926/Random-user-profile-created-in-C-drive-Documents-and-settings.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+could+file+found+instal+requir+sku111.cab

Is there a way to get Office running properly again without the cd's? Moving some files around in the backend?  I appreciate greatly any help.

Thanks.

Hello yahmobthere,
This kind of error message frequently means that you have moved (or deleted) one of the "temporary" installation files. Then after you have installed a patch or update, the problem starts vexing you.

One approach is to play with the policy settings for your computer: http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/483111-solved-office-pro-2003-startup.html
Another approach is to use the Windows Installation Cleanup Utility http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301&Product=off2003

ASKER

Brad, thanks for your response.
I tried the first option, which states:

Open the Group Policy Editor by selecting Run from the Start Menu, and typing gpedit.msc. (If the file is missing, run mmc.exe instead. Then, select Add/Remove Snap-in from the Console menu, click Add, and double-click Group Policy. Click Finish, then Close, then Ok.)
Expand the following branches:
Local Computer Policy \ Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Installer
Double-click Disable Windows Installer to your right, click Enabled, and choose Always from the list. Click Ok when you're done.
The change will take effect immediately. If you added a snap in, as described above, you don't need to "save changes to the console."

Windows couldn't find gpedit.msc when I typed it in.
MMC.exe came up, but I coudn't find "Group Policy" so I could not go further. I am scared to do the other option as it seems I may mess up Office (since I Have no disc, I am trying to avoid that). Any other ideas? Or why "Group Policy" wasn't where it was supposed to be? I see "local users and groups" - is that the same thing?

Thanks
On my Windows XT machine, I have both gpedit.msc and mmc.exe. I don't have Group Policy, perhaps because my company's MIS department didn't install it.

gpedit.msc showed me settings for Local Computer Policy, which were more or less as described in the first link. The person asking the question encountered the same situation in that link--and the fix reportedly worked.

mmc.exe showed me nothing at first. But the File...Add/Remove Snap-In menu item displayed another dialog. Hitting the "Add" button on that dialog allowed me to add settings for Local Users and Groups.
I recommend getting the CD-Key for your copy of Office (you'll need it if you ever want to reinstall). Write it down, and keep it in a safe place.

As long as you don't have Office 2000, you should be able to extract the CD-key for Office from the registry. Free utilities like Belarc Advisor or Magical Jelly Bean can retrieve that key
Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
The Beta version is be required for Office 2007: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/beta/

Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html (doesn't work on Office 2007)

The reason I mention this precaution is because you can reinstall using a friend's copy of media from the same version of Office (e.g. Office Professional 2003, OEM version). You just need your own CD-key. Note that "same version of Office" means that you must match the Edition (Professional, Standard, etc.), year (97, 2000, 2003, 2007) and source (OEM, retail, academic).
well, when I typed "gpedit.msc" into run, it said the file was not there. I am doing a search on my computer for it.

I looked again, but when I went into mmc.exe, "group policy" was not listed after hitting "add" past the snap on menu. There is a users and groups button, but it said because I am using XP, I Have to do that through the control panel.

So, that option isn't working because what the person said to look for, is just not on here (gpedit and the group policy options).

Do you have any other ideas? I appreciate your work on this, and am at my wit's end.
According to this Knowledge Base article, SKU111.cab pertains to Office 2003 Professional (retail).http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896866/en-us

And this one suggests running a program to repair your registry settings for the installation file: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913420/en-us   You can download the Custom Maintenance Wizard program the article talks about from here http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011401711033.aspx

Have you been able to retrieve your CD-key? This is about 25 characters long (mix of letters and numbers) and should have been on a sticker on the back of the install CD for your copy of Office. It is not the same as the Product ID that appears in the Help....About Microsoft Excel menu item. You need to use Magical Jelly Bean or Belarc Advisor to get it. Please do so before trying the fixes suggested by Microsoft.
I have the key, used magical jelly bean (thank you) but as mentioned, don't have the disc so I am hesitant to do any changes that could wipe out office (since it's working now, just hiccuping).
The links you have provided all seem to be good options IF I had the cd, but because I don't, I am wondering if there is a fix w/o the disc. Like I mentioned, it's working, it just has that damn prompt come up each time. Seems like there would be a fix or a move within the registry to get it going, but I haven't found it. And since that MMC.exe option doesn't fully work and I don't have gpedit.msc, I am confused.
