configure Dlink DSL Modem to log in to Bellsouth.net

I have a client that uses a Netopia DSL Modem to connect to Bellsout (now ATT).  The present modem will periodically drop out and I have to travel to site and try to get back into modem to re-login to bellsouth.  Had nothing but frustration with Bellsouth tech support.  ie long waits, base level support etc.. Bought a Dlink 2540 Modem/Router and tried to connect.  Would not allow me to log in.  ( sync light green connect redredt).  I go from there to a Linksys wireless N router/switch on which half of the office depends for network connection.  Can someone help me with the modem configuration?  Also should the DHCP be configured on the modem or the wireless router.

Are you able to use any modem with your ISP? With many you must use the one provided, or at least advise them of the change before it will connect.

As for the wireless router:
If you wish to share resources between the wired and wireless LAN best to put them on the same subnet. To do so you need to make the wireless router an access point, rather than a gateway. To do so:
-no changes required to the D-link/wired router
-reset the wireless WAN connection to default, i.e un-configured
-assign the wireless LAN side an IP address in the same subnet as the wired router.  Make sure it does not conflict with the wired router's DHCP range, or any statically assigned devices
-disable DHCP on the wireless
-wireless connections should be configured in the normal manor
-connect a cable from one of the LAN ports of the wired router to one of the LAN (not WAN) ports of the wireless. If the lights do not light up indicating a connection you may need a cross-over cable (usually only necessary on older units)
-now all devices should have Internet access and be able to easily connect to one another to share resources. Don't forget to refresh and DHCP addresses on the wireless clients
Thanks for response.
I do suspect there is something proprietary on the netopia.  Can't get ATT tech support on the phone my patience on my cell phone does not last more than 10 minutes.  I will keep trying. I do have the netopia working now, but for how long I don't know..  I suspect it is a heat problem.  Put it in more ventilated spot.
OK, I had it right on the wireless router.  DHCP is disabled on it. Getting DHCP from the Netopia.
Thamks for the confirmation.
Just fpuind out today that Comcast cable is available at client's address.  6M/512 for $69 and 34/7 service.  Guess I'll switch them over

Still like to be able to configure Dlink
