Service Pack 2 install - hangs when Checking product key

Have reimaged a Toshiba R100 with the supplied Toshiba recovery disks. Have updated windows via windows updates but when installing SP2, the progress bar hangs and details say: Checking product key. This has been left for 10 hrs to "check product key" but no progress.
