SQL Server Replication Log Reader Agent Error

I'm trying to set up transactional replication from one SQL server to another.  Both machines are running SQL Server 2000 Enterprise.  I'm able to set up Snapshot replication easily and without issues, but when I set up Transactional Replication, I immediately get an access violation error message on the Log Reader Agent.  No error code, no description, nothing.  Just the words "An access violation occurred".  I have no idea what the problem is or where to look, and would appreciate any help offered.

I am running the same account for replication on both servers, but the error is coming up immediately after the publication is created, before I get a chance to set up which server to push the publication to.
And you dont get any other description of the error?

No, I don't.  I've never seen anything like this before.  Apparently the transaction log cannot be read for whatever reason.
Is the account you are running under and admin on both servers?

Yes, I'm running the same account on each server.  The Windows Event Viewer isn't really telling me much either.  It says "Microsoft SQL Server Replication : The LOGREAD.EXE executable is terminating abnormally because it hit an exception. Exception Code c0000005. Check file ReplExceptLogRdr.log for details."
I can't even find this file on my server.
