"Unauthenticated" warning on a domain

We have a Vista Business & SBS2003 network and a couple of the client machines give warnings saying that DOMAIN.local is Unauthenticated - but it gives it as a copy - i.e. "DOMAIN.local 2 is Unauthenticated"

Only a couple of the machines have this problem, they experience no restrictions in the networks, they can log onto the server - use their exchange mail accounts and it seems to be intermittent, it was ok this morning and an hour later it made a copy of the domain and said its Unauthenticated.

All the users have Admin privilages - no specific GPO's have been assigned (there was - WSUS - but this was removed) which leads to a 2nd problem: windows update still thinks its managed by the system administrator and not by each individual client even though all GPO's relating to the WSUS were removed and the group policy was updated.

If these are symptoms of the same problem - which i doubt - then great, if not, why are only a couple of the machines on the network which have no specific settings or anything special about them say they are Unauthenticated?  We've tried leaving the domain and re-joining, disabling the NIC but to no avail.

We have just done all of this - still says Unauthenticated
Please run a netdiag and addiag and post the results please. (You might have to download the support tools)
Also please run the SBS BPA  and see what comes up.

here's the result of the SBS BPA:

Free disk space is very low :
F: has 14% free space remaining (less than 20% of free space available). You should consider adding more storage or removing unnecessary files. For information on moving data folders, see "Moving Data Folders for Windows SBS 2003" at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=49931.

  CEICW not completed succesfully :
The Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard was not completed successfully in the last run.

  EDNS is enabled :
EDNS is enabled on this server. Some of the routers or firewalls may not support EDNS. You should disable EDNS on this server. To do so, click Start, and then click Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt window, type dnscmd /Config /EnableEdnsProbes 0 and then restart the DNS Server service.

Reverse DNS Zone does not allow Secure updates :
You should configure Reverse Lookup Zone: 16.168.192.in-addr.arpa to allow only secure dynamic updates. To configure the Reverse Lookup Zone, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS. Right-click the Reverse Lookup Zone: 16.168.192.in-addr.arpa, and then click Properties. Select Secure only from the Dynamic Updates dropdown list.

Hi Alex,
Don't worry to much about the HDD space you'll need to fix that but it does not have anything to do with your issue.
Those NIC drivers need to be updated.  Once you've done that run the SBS BPA again and will probably ask you to fix TCP IP Chimney and a few others. Quite simple follow the decription in the BPA.
Fix EDNS and the most important one: Reverse DNS.  After that restart the server 2x and rerun the CEICW. You need to get that one to run.
Awaiting the other issues.

I did a repair install of vista office 2007 - and the Unauthenicated appears to have disappeared.  I will leave it for about a week and see if the error crops up again
ok after going out of the office for a couple of hours and coming back, it seems to have reverted back to Unauthenticated - i will perform the additional steps and report back

Microsoft has dramatically improved the utility and overall quality of System Restore utility. I went back in time to the point when Network Location was "Domain" & "Private" and ther were no second managed network location domain.local 2 and then it all started working as the charm :)

I went through the list of the software I installed (after that checkpoint that worked). I found WinDVD software which comes with Visual C++ package (notSP1) which at least not officially compatible with Vista. That also brings the update for XML services from the memory. All together it buggered the whole thing. Will keep an eye on it.

All steps have been done, still comes up with Unauthenticated
Alex, Olaf,

I experience the same problem. I've tried the steps Olaf suggested but cannot figure out how to run netdiag and adiag on a Vista machine. I cannot find any version of the tools that can run on Vista. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
AZ.
You can install Windows Server 2003 Support Tools, these tools run on Windows Vista. On the Windows Server 2003 CD,they are located in the Support\Tools folder or you can download them.
In Vista you need to run the tools as administrator. Some tools might not work but netdiag and dcdiag certainely do.
Hope that helps.
