Configure .dotx to be compatible with Office 03

A couple of users in our office use Office 2007. We haven't moved everyone over and most are still using 2003. The 2003 cannot open .dotx files After doing a little research, it seems that .dotx documents, which are created in Office 2007, cannot be opened in earlier versions of Office, even if the compatibility pack is installed. I've configured the few installs of Office 07 to default to saving in 2003 format. Is it possible to configure Office 2007 to save the templates in an earlier version?

1. With the Office compatibility pack computers installed earlier versions (200-2003) are able to open new new file formats from Office 2007

2. As you said it is possible to save documents in Office 2007 as compatible file formats (97-2003)
3. You can create a group policy which sets the default file type when saving to the older format

Thank you for your reply. My question is more specific to the template files, i.e., .dotx not .docx. Do you know if the template files can be configured to save in earlier versions?

Thx!

OK, I did find that a user with 07 can do a "save as" and save in earlier file type. Do you mean that a user with 2003 can do a "save as"? I tried that and it didn't work.
I mean that a user with 2007 can save a .dot (97-2003) file via...
Office -> Button -> Save as -> Filetype .dot

OK, that's what I thought. I was hoping to find an automated solution for this particular user creating the documents. Thx for your help.
